Ari Aster's 3-Hour Version Of 'Midsommar' Will Debut At This Year's Scary Movies XII Festival In NYC

This year marks the 12th edition of the Scary Movies festival at Film at Lincoln Center. While horror fans, in general, would be amped on seeing some of the best the genre has to offer at one of the best screening locations in the country, this year has something special that is sure to attract many a film fan. This year, Scary Movies XII is going to feature the world premiere of Ari Aster’s extended version of “Midsommar.”

We just recently learned that Aster was hard at work adding about 30 minutes of new footage to his already-long recent horror film, but now, we know where audiences will get a chance to experience it first. Clocking in at nearly three-hours, the extended version will be shown for the first time ever on August 17 at Film at Lincoln Center, with a special Q&A with the director to follow. If anyone out there is attending, can I suggest you ask him about his parents? Make sure they’re doing okay? It sure does seem like he has some parental issues that he’s working through with his films, huh? But I digress.

Of course, Aster’s film is only one of the highlights of a jam-packed event. Dan Berk and Robert Olsen’s darkly funny thriller “Villains,” which stars Maika Monroe and Bill Skarsgård, will be the Opening Night selection. And closing out the festival is “Ready or Not,” the horror film that recently released a trailer and features a twisted take on the classic kids game of Hide and Seek.

Scary Movies XII kicks off on August 16 and runs until August 21. Tickets go on sale August 2, and you better believe that they’ll go fast, especially for “Midsommar.”
