Sony Says 'Morbius' Doesn't Take Place In The MCU Despite Tyrese Gibson Saying So

Obviously, if you want to get straight, factual answers out of actors in an interview about a superhero film, that’s a fool’s errand. These people are trained in the art of deflection and avoidance when pressed to give spoiler-y details. But in the case of the interview with Tyrese Gibson and Comicbook.com, it appears the actor not only shouldn’t have opened up about certain topics, but he was actually flat-out wrong when giving his answers regarding “Morbius” and its involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Over the weekend, an interview was published where Tyrese Gibson, who is promoting his pseudo-superhero film, “F9,” was talking about his upcoming Sony film, “Morbius.” For those unaware, “Morbius” stars Jared Leto as the title character, a “living vampire” that has shown up in quite a few Marvel Comics over the decades. The film is presumably in the same ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff universe where “Venom” resides, but there has been a lot of discussions (from the studio and folks involved with both films) that the spinoff universe is somehow connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And this is what led to Gibson starting a bit of a furor over the weekend.

Speaking with Comicbook.com, when asked (twice) if “Morbius” exists in the MCU (further asked if it’s the same universe as the “Avengers” films), Tyrese Gibson gave an unequivocal, “Yes.” As you might expect, this sent fans into a frenzy, confirming that Leto and his film now exist in the same universe as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and everything else that’s going on in the MCU.

Well, to nip that discussion in the bud, Sony undercut the actor’s statement by saying the film exists in the Sony Marvel Universe where “Venom” is situated and does not have any crossover with the MCU. This is further complicated when you see the fact that Michael Keaton appears in “Morbius” and first appeared in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” But perhaps that’s more of an Easter Egg than a true crossover?

In addition, Tyrese hinted that Sony would be releasing the film in October 2022 instead of its announced January 2022 date. The studio quickly denied that, saying “Morbius” would in fact be released on January 28, 2022, as expected.

All that to say, don’t believe every word from the mouth of actors in Marvel films. Either they’re deflecting and not giving straight answers or maybe they’re just not completely understanding the situation and will give incorrect questions. Either way, just wait and watch the film yourself and the answers should become clear.
