'Moon Knight' Writer Jeremy Slater Picked To Script 'Mortal Kombat' Sequel

Despite only earning $84 million worldwide (in light of its HBO Max debut and the pandemic), it appears Warner Bros. is still excited about the “Mortal Kombat” franchise. So much so, the studio has now enlisted writer Jeremy Slater to pen the next installment.

According to Deadline, Jeremy Slater has been picked to write the follow-up film to last year’s “Mortal Kombat.” Based on the video game franchise of the same name, last year’s R-rated action film followed the story of a group of good guys who traveled to a mysterious land to fight some evil monstrous baddies in hopes of saving the world. Typically, this would involve a literal Mortal Kombat, which is a “Bloodsport”-esque tournament of champions, but for some reason, the film titled “Mortal Kombat” decided to not include an actual Mortal Kombat. Go figure.

Slater is probably best known for being the head writer for the upcoming Marvel Studios series, “Moon Knight.” He also is the co-creator and showrunner of “The Exorcist” TV series in addition to writing episodes of “The Umbrella Academy” and the upcoming “Tommyknockers” film adaptation of the Stephen King novel.

No real details are known, at this time, about the “Mortal Kombat” sequel. Again, we can only hope that the script will include an actual tournament this time. And we can also hold out hope that the studio will skip using the new character, Cole Young, and just focus on the plethora of colorful, interesting characters that already exist in the video game franchise. Honestly, why not just keep Joe Taslim’s Subzero and move on with a new story there? That actually might be good.
