When it was reported a couple weeks back that Netflix was already in development on a sequel to “Bright,” the internet scoffed. Film Twitter had already written off the movie, as critics roasted it over the fire, but that wasn’t the whole story. While the streaming giant will never confirm the numbers, according to Nielsen, viewership was huge for the film. Even more, audiences actually liked it. At the end of the day, that’s all Netflix needs to hear.
The company has officially confirmed that a “Bright” sequel is on the way. David Ayer will be returning to write and direct, with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton expected to return. One name that is nowhere near the followup is Max Landis, who penned the original script. Last month, it seemed he was slyly subtweeting about “Bright,” but besides that, he might be facing some other more pressing issues at the moment.
At any rate, Netflix is making a sequel to “Bright” — title to be determined — and somewhere out there are a whole lot of people exited by this news.
