You already know our feelings on James Gray and his films, so you know the next couple weeks will last forever as we await his latest film “The Immigrant” (previously known as both “Lowlife” and “Nightingale“), so here are a few new images for now.
Starring Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner, the movie is set during the 1920s and tells the tale of a Polish immigrant’s tough journey to the United States where she crosses paths with a pimp who forces her to sell her body and a magician who could be her salvation. Here’s the full synopsis:
1920. In search of a new start and the American dream, Ewa Cybulski (Marion Cotillard) and her sister Magda sail to New York from their native Poland. When they reach Ellis Island, doctors discover that Magda is ill, and the two women are separated. Ewa is released onto the mean streets of Manhattan while her sister is quarantined. Alone, with nowhere to turn and desperate to reunite with Magda, she quickly falls prey to Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix), a charming but wicked man who takes her in and forces her into prostitution. And then one day, Ewa encounters Bruno’s cousin, the debonair magician Orlando (Jeremy Renner). He sweeps Ewa off her feet and quickly becomes her only chance to escape the nightmare in which she finds herself.
The Weinstein Company has the U.S. rights but no release date has been set just yet. “The Immigrant” will screen at Cannes on Friday, May 24th.
