New Look: Richard Loncraine's 'The Special Relationship'

Here is a new look at Richard Loncraine’s HBO Film, “The Special Relationship”, which is set to premiere on May 29th.

Written by Peter Morgan as the third part of his Tony Blair trilogy — the film will star Michael Sheen as the former British Prime Minister, a role he has already played twice in Stephen Frears’ films “The Deal” and “The Queen”. Reuniting Sheen with his “The Queen” co-star, Helen McCrory as Cherie Blair, the film puts under the microscope the unique and turbulent relationship between President Bill Clinton and the PM during their tenures as leaders of their respective countries. Dennis Quaid and Hope Davis also star as Bill and Hillary Clinton.

The film spans the period between 1994 and 1998, and traces the ups and downs of the respective leaders’ reigns including the Kosovo War and the Monica Lewinsky affair with a focus on the education Blair received from the more experienced Clinton.

Promos for “The Special Relationsip” have already played on HBO and of the four actors, Quaid is apparently the only one to mimic their real-life counterpart’s voice and mannerisms. A score from Alexandre Desplat also features in the pic.

The project will mark yet another major production on the HBO calendar this season which already boasts the WWII miniseries “The Pacific,” the Al Pacino-starrer “You Don’t Know Jack” and numerous other projects from the likes of Kathryn Bigelow, Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann and Jonathan Demme on the way.
