Nicole Kidman Explains How Meryl Streep Joined 'Big Little Lies' & Says A Season 3 Is Unlikely

Nicole Kidman is probably having the best year of her acting career in 2018. Not only is she starring in multiple films with Oscar aspirations (“Boy Erased” and “Destroyer”), but the actress is also going to play the mother of Jason Momoa’s titular character in the Warner Bros. blockbuster “Aquaman” and is also the star of the Emmy-winning HBO series “Big Little Lies.” So yeah, life is pretty great for Nicole Kidman.

All of these roles are covered in a new interview with Variety. However, the actress explains how it’s not her film work that gets her stopped on the streets. It’s that HBO series, “Big Little Lies,” that gets her the most attention. And according to Kidman, she feels it’s because the series is the most “commercial” project she’s done.

“That’s the character people talk to me about more than anything else,” Kidman says about her “Big Little Lies” character, Celeste Wright. “It’s probably the most commercial thing I’ve done in my whole career.”

But even with an Emmy award for her work on the series, Kidman still doesn’t like watching her acting on screen. She explains, “When I saw the therapy scene, which people really responded to, I thought I was terrible. And everyone was like, ‘No, no!’ I think it was because I felt too exposed and vulnerable. It was probably too much for me to see.”

Even with the acclaim the first season of the series received, fans are expecting much, much more in Season 2. The main reason that “Big Little Lies” has a mountain of expectations has less to do with the trophies but more to do with the latest addition to the cast — Meryl Streep.

Kidman explains that Streep came on to the project solely due to the legendary actress’ own insistence. With no script, Steep emailed Kidman and Reese Witherspoon (co-star and producer) the night of the series’ Golden Globe wins.

“She goes, ‘I suppose now I have to join you.’ And we were like, ‘What?’ The two of us were just shocked,” said Kidman. “She hadn’t even read it. That’s how much she wanted to support us.”

And the experience of acting opposite Streep was still a challenge, according to Kidman. “I was terrified,” the actress says. “You’re acting opposite the great one. I get nervous anyway — but to be opposite her and not want her to think, ‘Who is this amateur?’ And also, we want to deliver a series for her that she’s great in. Reese and I were like, ‘We want this for her and for the other women.’ They have much stronger roles in the second one.”

The second season of “Big Little Lies” is almost certainly going to be a huge hit for HBO. However, even with that massive fan base and a shelf full of Emmys, the network is going to have a hard time getting the cast to reunite for a third season.

“I think it would be hard to get the whole group together,” Kidman says. “But we would love to do it.”

There’s no release date for “Big Little Lies” season 2, but “Destroyer” will hit theaters on December 25.
