‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’: Kathleen Kennedy Says Season 2 Has Be Discussed & Offers First Look At Darth Vader’s Return

Darth Vader is back! Ok, fine, the fact that the “Star Wars” villain is going to make his triumphant return in a film or TV series isn’t all that shocking. After the original trilogy, he had a whole prequel trilogy devoted to his story. Then he showed up in “Rogue One” just several years ago. This isn’t to mention all the books, comics, and animated appearances over the years. But hey, it’s still exciting to see him return in the upcoming “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series. Doubly so because it also marks the return of Hayden Christensen to the character. And now, we have a first look at the character’s latest return to the franchise.

Thanks to the folks at EW, we have our first look at Darth Vader, as played by Hayden Christensen, in the upcoming “Obi-Wan Kenobi” streaming series. And yes, it looks like Darth Vader. What more were you expecting, folks?

But that’s not all! There’s also some hype coming from Christensen himself, talking about the type of Vader we’ll be seeing in this series.

“We’re going to see a very powerful Vader,” said the actor.

Writer Joby Harold added, “His shadow is cast across so much of what we do. And the degree of his proximity to that shadow is something that we’ll discover. But he is very much a part of the show emotionally for Obi-Wan, and possibly beyond that as well.”

Basically, we probably shouldn’t expect a ton of Vader, but he’s there and he’s likely going to dust off the lightsaber for a battle against his former mentor, Obi-Wan, played once again by Ewan McGregor. But taking Vader out of the picture, it’s clear “Obi-Wan Kenobi” is a series about, well, Obi-Wan. And because of that, there’s always the chance that we see more adventures in the future, such as a possible Season 2, right?

“It was definitely conceived as a limited series, and it is one big story with a beginning, middle, and end,” said director Deborah Chow. “The approach has always been that it is one full story.”

That’s sweet that Chow thinks that this is going to be one and done. Let’s be honest, Lucasfilm loves to milk the hell out of “Star Wars” content, so do we honestly think that “Obi-Wan Kenobi” won’t return for Season 2 if there’s a chance it can be made? Kathleen Kennedy already admits that discussions have been happening.

“It’s certainly something we talk about, mainly because everybody came together and had such an incredible time,” said Kennedy. “Ewan had an incredible time. Hayden had an incredible time. So certainly from that point of view, everybody involved would love to see this not end. But we have to really spend our time asking the question: Why would we do it? If we were to decide to do anything more with the Obi-Wan character, we’d have to really answer the question why?”

“Obi-Wan Kenobi” is sure to be a huge hit when it debuts on May 25. I’m sure they’ll find an answer for the “Why have Season 2?” pretty quickly, right?
