The 40th ASC Awards were ’80s themed from production design to its music cues, but rewarded some of the best cinematic work of the past year. There was one tie (almost an ASC tradition), a Wes Anderson video introduction to the legendary Robert Yeoman, and a charming speech in person from Owen Wilson. At least three winners were not on hand because they were filming around the world, but the big winner of the night was. Michael Bauman, who took the Theatrical Feature Film Award for “One Battle After Another.”

While the ASC is often seen as a precursor for the Oscar, it has only lined up 18 times over the past 39 years. Last year’s ASC winner, “Maria’s” Edward Lachman, lost the eventual Oscar to “The Brutalist’s” Lol Crowley.
The Spotlight Award, recognizing up-and-coming cinematographers, went to Mátyás Erdély for “Orphan.”
The winner of Episode of a Half-Hour Series was Adam Newport-Berra for “The Studio” (“The Oner”). The Drama Series trophy was a tie between Alex Disenhof, ASC for “Task” (“Crossings”) and Christophe Nuyens, SBC for “Andor” (“I Have Friends Everywhere”). Limited Series was something of an upset as Pete Konczal took it for “Black Rabbit” (“Isle of Joy”), over the second episode of “Adolescence.”
The Documentary Award went to Mstyslav Chernov and Alex Babenko for “2000 Meters from Andriivka.” A few hours earlier, Chernov won the WGA Award for Documentary.
The Music Video honor went to Rodrigo Prieto for “The Fate of Ophelia” (Performed by Taylor Swift). He was shooting in Eastern Europe and unable to attend. This was his first win after seven nominations.
Among the seven honorary awards, David Mullen won the Career Achievement in Television Award, Cynthia Pusheck was honored with the President’s Award, Stephen Pizzello received the Award of Distinction, Yeoman was given the Lifetime Achievement Award, Guillermo del Toro landed the Board of Governors Award, and Kodak received the Curtis Clark Technology Award.
