Oscar Bait? David Fincher's 'Gone Girl' Sets Fall 2014 Release Date

Affleck, Gone Girl

With production in full swing on David Fincher‘s “Gone Girl,” he’s now got a release date target to hit (and plenty of time to make it), with 20th Century Fox now slating the thriller for a prime awards season bow. Or is it?

The studio has dated the movie to hit theaters on October 3, 2014 where it will face off against “Dracula Untold” (lol). And on the surface, it would seem Fox is taking a page from the playbook used for “The Social Network,” which dropped on October 1, 2010 and went on to earn eight Oscar nominations, winning three for Best Score, Best Screenplay and Best Editing. So is that the plan? Maybe, or it could just be pulp counter-programming. Fox is also handling Ridley Scott‘s “The Counselor,” which hits theaters next month, and right now, it doesn’t seem like there is any awards season push with that one, with the marketing sticking solely to the stars and entertainment value, something further emphasized by its complete absence on the festival circuit.

Time will tell if the flick starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit, Carrie Coon, Tyler Perry, Neil Patrick Harris and one of the topless girls from that “Blurred Lines” video will surprise with some serious Oscar-worthy elements, or will simply be a ripping good yarn.

In other Fox release date news: “Frankenstein” has been pushed to January 16, 2015, while two movies with no details about them yet, Son of God” and Book of Life” have booked February 28, 2014 and October 17, 2014 dates, respectively. [Box Office Mojo]
