Oscar Isaac Says ‘Moon Knight’ Is Full Of “Very Weird Decisions” Because There Is No Box Office Pressure

One of the most anticipated pieces of superhero content coming in 2022 is the new Disney+ series, “Moon Knight.” Not only does the series star Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke, but the fact that it’s a strange C-list Marvel character and seems to be much darker than previous MCU stories adds to the intrigue. And according to Isaac, thanks to “Moon Knight” being a series and not a film, it is able to take a lot of risks.

Speaking with Jared Leto as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Oscar Isaac talked about his upcoming debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in “Moon Knight.” And the actor talked about how his experience of telling a superhero story is probably different than what Leto went through with “Morbius” because “Moon Knight” isn’t beholden to box office results.

“I’d never heard of ‘Moon Knight’ before, and I collected comics when I was younger. I’d heard of ‘Morbius,’ but I’d never heard of ‘Moon Knight,’” said Isaac. “I don’t know how the process was for you because it’s a feature film, we’re a limited series. There was a lot of room to try stuff because there wasn’t the pressure that we got to make sure we make however many hundreds of millions of dollars on the opening weekend. So we could make it very point-of-view. We could make very weird decisions. At the moment, at least — and I don’t imagine it’s going to go backwards — it feels like that’s where more of the risk is being taken because it can financially.”

“Moon Knight” is inspired by the Marvel Comics character of the same name and follows the story of a man, Marc Spector, who is a former special forces soldier who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder and thinks he might actually be a hero given powers from the Egyptian moon god, Khonshu. It’s a super strange premise that seems to fit what Isaac is saying about taking risks and making “weird decisions.” Hopefully, that leads to a series unlike anything that Marvel Studios has made before.

“Moon Knight” is set to debut on Disney+ on March 30.
