It’s been a long time since the debut of the film “Outlaws” back at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. Back then, the film was called “1%.” After its debut at the fall festival more than a year ago, A24 picked up the distribution rights and everyone assumed we’d see the film sometime in 2018. It appears that we actually won’t get to see “Outlaws” until well into 2019.
A24 released a new trailer for the film, and with it, the release date of February 1. However, if film fans have waited a year already, what’s a couple extra months? The premise of “Outlaws” is fairly straightforward. After being locked up in prison for a while, the president of a motorcycle club gets released and steps back into the leadership role. However, the man that had taken over while he was gone is interested in making his role as leader more permanent. As you might expect, this leads to a confrontation.
It’s hard to watch the trailer and not immediately be reminded of “Sons of Anarchy.” The popular FX show, which recently spun off a new series titled “Mayans M.C.,” featured a very similar storyline, where a young upstart was attempting to take over the leadership of an “MC” from the older regime. Of course, “Outlaws” is only a feature film and won’t have its story dragged out over seven years, so that’s a plus.
“Outlaws” stars Ryan Corr, Abbey Lee, Matt Nable, and Aaron Pederson. The film is directed by Stephen McCallum, making his directorial debut.
“Outlaws” will hit theaters February 1, 2019.
