'The Toxic Avenger': Peter Dinklage To Star In Macon Blair's Reboot Of The Subversive Superhero Film

Even though anyone familiar with the original “Toxic Avenger” film from 1984 would find it strange that a studio is interested in rebooting the franchise, the allure of a superhero IP that hasn’t been mined is too strong for Hollywood to pass up. So, it was announced more than a year ago that “The Toxic Avenger” is getting remade. And as strange as that is, you’ll never guess who’s going to star in the film.

According to Deadline, Peter Dinklage has signed on to star in “The Toxic Avenger.” it’s unclear what his role might be, but the award-winning actor is set to join the cast of the upcoming superhero film that is written and directed by Macon Blair. Of course, you’re going to immediately think that maybe Dinklage could grab the mop and put on the tutu to suit up as Toxie, but the report doesn’t confirm that as a fact, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

“The Toxic Avenger” is said to be a superhero film that subverts the genre. And again, if you are familiar with the original, you know that’s exactly what Lloyd Kaufman and Troma tried to do back in the ‘80s with the low-budget, gory, inappropriate film. This was “Deadpool” nearly a decade before anyone thought to create the Marvel character. The film tells the story of a weakling, janitor nerd that is bullied by everyone and is thrown into a vat of toxic waste. He’s then transformed into the grotesque mutant, The Toxic Avenger, who vows to clean up the streets. The film is known for its satire of superhero tropes while also presenting a bit of a skewed environmental message. Basically, there’s a ton of real estate for Blair to work with in crafting a modern take.

Dinklage is probably best known for his Emmy-winning role in “Game of Thrones.” He’s also been in a couple of superhero films such as “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” So, he’s no stranger to the genre.

Macon Blair is a relatively new filmmaker, having only directed one feature, “I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore.” However, he’s also written a number of great indie features including “Blue Ruin,” “Green Room,” and “Small Crimes.” His most recent writing project was the Netflix film, “Hold the Dark.”

It’s unclear when we might see “The Toxic Avenger” in theaters once again, but with Dinklage aboard, we honestly can’t wait to see what the hell they have cooked up.
