Variety reports that Peter Weir‘s “Picnic At Hanging Rock” will be expanded into a six-part miniseries for Australian television. The plan, essentially, seems to be to mine the source material, the novel by Joan Lindsay, to further expand the narrative that Weir captured so compellingly in his picture.

“The 1975 film which was pivotal in establishing the modern Australian film industry. This series, based on the classic novel, will take viewers on a new and in depth journey into this incredibly iconic Australian story,” Foxtel head of drama, Penny Win, said in a statement.

The wheels are moving along pretty fast on this one, with a debut in 2017 planned, but no word yet on the directors or cast who will be bringing this to life.
