Rian Johnson "Would Be Thrilled" To Do More 'Knives Out' Films With Daniel Craig But Don't Call Them "Sequels"

Ever since the cast was announced, in quick order, no less, for Rian Johnson’s upcoming film, “Knives Out,” the murder-mystery has been perched atop many film fans’ most-anticipated of 2019. And with the marketing already begun, with an incredible trailer, and the dazzling reviews from this weekend, “Knives Out” seems to be a film that might actually live up to the immense hype.

Speaking to UPROXX, writer-director Johnson says that he’s excited about the reception and hopes that the film’s possible financial success could lead to more films featuring Daniel Craig and an Agatha Christie-like setting.

“I’ll tell you, the truth is I had such a great time working with Daniel Craig and I had so much fun doing this on every level, from writing it to making it,” said Johnson. “I’ve never really been interested in doing sequels, but this, the idea of doing more of these with Daniel as his character, is not sequels. It’s just what Agatha Christie did. It’s just coming up with a whole new mystery, a whole new location, all-new cast, whole new mechanics of the appeal of a mystery and everything. It’d be a blast.”

He added, “I would be so thrilled. And I don’t want to jinx it by starting into it, because I want to see how this does but … yeah. Yeah. I’ve been crossing my fingers I get to do more of these.”

Judging by the reception that “Knives Out” is receiving based on its TIFF premiere, it’s likely that Johnson has a hit on his hands. In our review of the film, we said, “There’s so much to love about Johnson’s triumph, both as gratuitously enjoyable entertainment and the first film to take on the significance of a President Trump without lapsing into corny preachiness…Just suffice it to say that the genre maestro has his audience in good hands, ‘good’ in this instance meaning both ‘skilled, capable, expert’ and ‘decent, ethically sound.’”

And as long as that pesky upcoming “Star Wars” trilogy doesn’t get in the way, maybe we’ll see the further adventures of Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc in the future.

“Knives Out” lands in theaters on November 27.
