Rian Johnson Says 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Won't Be "Derivative" Of Previous Films

Stepping into a franchise as beloved as “Star Wars” isn’t easy, but that weight of responsibility grows even heavier by the expectations that diehard fans place on each entry. While both “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” were both generally well received, there are some who felt it unnecessary to have yet another big, Death Star-like planet and a story that played to familiar beats (in the case of the former), or a movie stuffed with throwback nods and appearances by classic characters (in the case of the latter). We’re yet to see a movie that truly departs from the format of the original trilogy, but Rian Johnson says his film will do just that.

Responding to a fan on Twitter about their concerns that “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” will repeat the same “mistakes” (one person’s homage, is another person’s tired callback), the director is candid about what he’s doing with the film.

We hope Johnson doesn’t get too agitated by these kinds of questions because he’s never going to please everybody. Fanboys are always the first to claim they want something different but are also the first to complain when they don’t get the expected elements they wanted. There’s still a long road to “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” which opens on December 15th. [via We Got This Covered]
