Rick Famuyiwa To Direct Former David Fincher Project ‘Black Hole'

David Fincher has circled/almost directed a lot of movies in his time, and eight years ago, we ran down The 5 Lost David Fincher Projects We’d Still Love To See One Day. Making the cut was “Black Hole,” the adaptation of Charles Burns‘ acclaimed novel. Plenty of talent has attempted to wrangle the material, with Alexandre Aja (“Haute Tension,” “Piranha 3D”) originally attached to direct, while Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary tried and failed to write a script that pleased Fincher. Despite the valiant attempts, the project has languished, but is now coming back to life.

Dope” director Rick Famuyiwa, has dusted himself off after exiting “The Flash,” has signed up to write and direct “Black Hole.” The surreal story follows a group of Seattle teenagers who contract a sexually-transmitted-disease that causes physical mutations. Yep, the metaphor about sexual awakening and adolescence is right there, with plenty of opportunities for a filmmaker to add some hefty visual style (you can see why Fincher was attracted to the material).

Brad Pitt’s Plan B and New Regency’s Arnon Milchan are producing the movie, with the latter production company financing the picture. No word yet on when cameras will roll, but we’re glad “Black Hole” has come back to life, with a director who will certainly make his mark on the material. Most recently, Famuyiwa directing episodes of Showtime’s “The Chi,” but we’re eager to see how his next outing on the big screen will turn out. [THR]
