Last month, there was a rumor circulating that Ryan Coogler was in active development on a “Sinners” sequel after the film made big bucks at the global box office (crossing the $350 million mark). However, that was dispelled over at Dark Horizons, who heard from the studio that the rumor “isn’t true.”
Adding to that recent refute from Warner Bros., Coogler himself stated he’s not interested in an interview with Ebony Magazine from April. In that piece, Coolger was directly asked by the outlet about turning “Sinners” into a franchise, if that was his plan from the jump with the vampire movie, and the prospect of a follow-up installment.

Coogler’s response to “Sinners” having franchise/sequel potential, “I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me, and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.”
“I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees, and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.”
Those quotes reveal that the filmmaker always designed “Sinners” to be a standalone experience. The ending of “Sinners” (no spoilers here) certainly left the door open for more adventures, but, given the quotes from Coogler, it wasn’t his aim with the movie.
Star and muse Michael B. Jordan seemed well aware of Coogler’s sequel stance when he was hyping the idea of a hypothetical prequel with the twins in Chicago, where they were aligned with criminal syndicates and bootleggers. As exciting as that idea was, Jordan was clear and respectful in his response that any future stories set in that world would come down to Coogler.
Only time will tell if Coogler changes his mind on “Sinners 2” as he’s busy with an “X-Files” revival series and also has “Black Panther 3” on deck at Marvel Studios.
Funny enough, while folks have been clamoring for “Sinners 2,” Jordan has another blockbuster vampire sequel movie in the works at WB. He was attached years back to star in a follow-up to the Will Smith sci-fi horror movie “I Am Legend,” (a modern remake of “Omega Man” and “The Last Man On Earth“) directed by Francis Lawrence, who is currently busy at Lionsgate with “Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping,” and is also working on a “Bioshock” movie at Netflix based on the popular video game franchise.
