Ryan Reynolds Teaming Up With Director Michael Bay On 'Six Underground' For Netflix

It appears the Netflix spending spree is ongoing and this time the streaming giant snatched up the team of one of the biggest actors in Hollywood and the director known for big explosions.

That’s right, Mr. Bayhem himself, Michael Bay, has agreed to release his next film through Netflix, and we have now learned that leading the cast will be none other than Ryan Reynolds. “Six Underground” is described as a “mission movie,” which is clearly going to be yet another excuse for Bay to include tons of gunfire and loud explosions. Also, Deadline is reporting that Netflix is ponying up a whopping $150 million for the feature film.

“Six Underground” is written by the duo of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, best known as the duo behind the two massively popular “Deadpool” films (which may explain the Reynolds coup). Recently, we reported that Bay had lined up “Six Underground” as his next film, followed by a long-in-development adaptation of the novel “Robopocalypse.”

Unless you’ve been living under a rock in the last couple weeks, you know that Ryan Reynolds can now be seen in the just-released “Deadpool 2,” which just scored the second-best R-rated opening weekend of all time (“Deadpool” owns the record). “Six Underground” marks the first time that Reynolds has teamed up with Bay, but on paper, this is definitely a collaboration that seems obvious. Reynolds is known for his sarcastic humor and action, while Bay is of course known for absurd action with mildly annoying lead actors.

This is, by far, the largest price tag associated with a Netflix Original film yet. Previously, the streaming service attempted big-budget action with the not-so-well-receivedBright,” which carried an almost-$100 million budget. While critics panned the film, audiences seemed to enjoy it, and a sequel is already in the works. Perhaps Netflix feels they have another critic-proof film with “Six Underground.”

There’s no firm release date for “Six Underground,” but according to Netflix, production should begin this summer, with a 2019 release date planned.
