RZA On The Search For A Director For Long-Awaited Ol' Dirty Bastard Biopic

We first reported about a potential film based on the life of famous Wu-Tang rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard, aka ODB, way back in 2009. Almost a decade ago, one of the founding members of Wu-Tang, RZA was attempting to get a film made. Then a few years later, in 2012, it was reported that Michael K. Williams was signed on to star in the film, and the members of the legendary rap group would play themselves. But ever since then, there’s been no word. Well, RZA is back at it and is really serious about bringing the story of ODB to the big screen.

According to THR, RZA is putting together a new version of the film at Sony and is currently on the search for a director to bring his vision to life. Because of the success of “Straight Outta Compton,” it appears that Hollywood is finally warming up to the idea of bringing Russell Tyrone Jones’ (ODB) amazing story, which ended tragically in 2004 due to a drug overdose, to life.

For those not familiar with ODB’s music, then you’re sadly missing a piece of hip hop’s history in your repertoire. While he rose to prominence with Wu-Tang, the rapper released a series of successful solo albums showing off his unique style. However, even if you’re not a hip-hop fan, you probably would recognize ODB for his two major MTV milestones that went viral before the days of viral videos.

First, at the Video Music Awards in 1998, the rapper stormed the stage after Wu-Tang lost to Puff Daddy to declare that “Wu-Tang is for the children!” This outburst joins a clip from MTV News back in the ‘90s when it shows ODB using a stretch limo to pick up his welfare check, well after he made substantial money as part of the Wu-Tang Clan.

RZA has spent the last decade becoming a bit of a Hollywood figure, as a director on films like “The Man with the Iron Fists” and the recent “Cut Throat City.” He’s also had a variety of acting roles and has even composed a few scores in his time.

No word on a release date yet, but hopefully the third time is a charm for RZA and the ODB film.
