Scarlett Johansson Says Leaving The MCU Is “Bittersweet” But She’s Leaving “On A High Note”

Before we had Chris Evans’ Captain America, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, or Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, there was Scarlett Johansson wowing Marvel fans with her debut as Black Widow in “Iron Man 2.” Outside of Robert Downey, Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson, Johansson has been involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe longer than any of her other original ‘Avengers’ co-stars. But on July 9, with the release of “Black Widow” in theaters and Disney+, the actress says goodbye to the superhero world that launched her into superstardom. And as you might expect, she has mixed feelings about this situation.

Speaking to Good Morning America, Scarlett Johansson spoke honestly about saying goodbye to the character of Black Widow but also the “Marvel family.”

“I think it’s bittersweet,” she explained. “I’ve had an incredible decade working with my Marvel family. I’m going to miss not seeing them every 18 months or two years, like those kind of milestones I always really look forward to. But I feel really proud of this film and I think it’s great to go out on a high note. This movie is so different from any other Marvel film that we’ve done so far, so yeah… like I said, it’s bittersweet.”

As mentioned, Johansson has been appearing in Marvel Studios films since 2010’s “Iron Man 2,” which means she’s spent more than a decade of her life inhabiting the character of Natasha Romanoff. And now, she gets to have her swansong in a massive solo film focused entirely on her character. Obviously, there are worst things in the world than being the lead actor in a blockbuster summer tentpole film after becoming a legend in the eyes of people around the world for a decade, but you can understand why “bittersweet” might be the best way to describe it.
