In the age of peak TV, when even niche shows with cult audiences manage to have a long shelf life, not everything is sustainable. And today, Showtime has laid to rest a series that just never seemed to gain any kind of momentum.
The network has pulled the plug on “Masters Of Sex.” Starring Lizzy Caplan and Michael Sheen, the show was based on the real story of Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson, their pioneering work in the field of human sexuality, and their complicated personal relationship. I gave the show a whirl and the first season was great, but I couldn’t sustain enough interest to get through the second season. And while the official line being offered is that the network, showrunners, and cast all agreed that they had told the story they set out to tell, the low ratings were likely also a factor. And thus, the show’s recently wrapped season four will be the last.
