'The Social Dilemma' Trailer: Netflix's Sundance Doc Tackles The Hidden Evils Of Social Media

In a world filled with people looking for the latest hot take, it’s not actually shocking to say that social media is a great tool that has turned into one of the most terrible inventions of the modern era. A technology that could be used to unite people from all walks of life and all countries around the globe has deteriorated into a fake news machine with people constantly arguing. To say it’s toxic is an understatement. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg in the upcoming documentary, “The Social Dilemma.”

As seen in the trailer for “The Social Dilemma,” the new doc takes a look at the creation of social media and what effect it has had on society. But it also goes a step further by pulling back the curtain and talking to people who were instrumental in the creation of these technologies and what type of information we provide is being used against us in the form of advertising and a growing dependence on these platforms.

The new doc is directed by Jeff Orlowski. The filmmaker is probably best known for his documentaries “Chasing Ice” and “Chasing Coral.” The latter of which premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and was picked up by Netflix. Both docs deal with the effects of climate change and the way it is destroying ecosystems. Clearly, Orlowski is still worried about the future of humanity, but now we’re talking about mental health and society, as a whole with “The Social Dilemma.”
