'Apples' Venice Trailer: A Surreal Meditation On Memory & Loss From Director Christos Nikou

What would you do if you woke up and couldn’t remember a thing? Not just that, but you’re not the only one with this sudden amnesia, as it spreads like an illness to other people. In the film “Apples,” the main character decides that maybe now is the time for a new beginning.

As seen in the new trailer for “Apples, filmmaker Christos Nikou presents a story of a man that finds himself with no memories of his previous life and surrounded by a world where this is happening to an increasing number of people. He can’t even remember if he likes apples or not. This leads him to a special recovery program where he must document his new life with polaroid pictures and recordings to help him piece together what he can and live a normal life.

“Apples” marks the feature film debut for Nikou as a director. Previously, he worked as an assistant director on a number of high-profile projects including “Before Midnight” and “Dogtooth.” But now, Nikou is stepping out on his own and hoping to launch his own career as a filmmaker.

“Apples” is expected to be the Opening Night feature of the Horizons section of this year’s Venice Film Festival. Hopefully, after festival appearance, it won’t take long for the film to get a formal release.

As an unpredictable, sweeping pandemic causes people to develop sudden amnesia, a man finds himself enrolled in a recovery program designed to help him build a new life. His treatment: performing daily tasks prescribed by his doctors on cassette tape, and capturing these new memories with a Polaroid camera. Greek writer-director Christos Nikou’s debut feature is a surreal and enigmatic work, a beguiling exploration of memory and identity.
