Tom Holland Might Have Two Films In Limbo As 'Spider-Man 3' Reportedly Facing Production Delay

At this point, it’s to be expected, but apparently, the upcoming Sony/Marvel Studios collaboration, the as-yet-untitled ‘Spider-Man 3,’ is likely going to be the latest blockbuster to see its production delayed, as the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the film industry.

According to a report from the BFI, ‘Spider-Man 3,’ which was expected to begin production this summer is likely going to see its filming delayed. Now, there’s no mention of when Sony/Marvel Studios are likely to begin work on the sequel, as no one really knows how long this global production stoppage is likely to last. But in the case of ‘Spider-Man 3,’ as opposed to “The Batman,” ‘Shang-Chi,’ and other superhero films that are now suffering stoppages, a return date might be a bit more complicated.

Now, I must preface this by saying this is speculation and I don’t have any insider knowledge of the situation. That being said, as has been brought up numerous times by trades and other folks with insider knowledge, the production stoppages that have been affecting major studios around the world are likely to have a domino effect that we still don’t know the full extent of. And that could mean trouble for films such as ‘Spider-Man 3,’ which has a lead actor that is also attached to another project being delayed.

Tom Holland isn’t actually working on ‘Spider-Man 3’ at this time. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced production suspensions, the actor was in the middle of filming “Uncharted,” which was going to be released by Sony in spring 2021. However, that film has been halted and when production is expected to resume, it’s assumed that Holland, along with co-star Mark Wahlberg, will continue work on “Uncharted.” That means, even if Sony begins working on films again by June, it’s still going to be a while before Holland can work on ‘Spider-Man 3.’

All that to say, the July 2021 release date for ‘Spider-Man 3’ is looking a bit questionable. We’ve already seen reports that “The Batman” and other 2021 releases will likely be pushed back because of the stoppage, and in the case of Matt Reeves’ WB superhero film, “The Batman” was already in production for weeks before the suspension.

Basically, not only is the production of ‘Spider-Man 3’ reportedly going to be delayed, but it’s beginning to look like a July 2021 release date isn’t in the cards, based on the domino effect of this delay. So, will Sony push it to later in the summer, the fall, winter, or maybe 2022? We shall find out.
