Spielberg Is Developing A Film Based On DC Comics' 'Blackhawk'

Steven Spielberg is making his move into the superhero world. Kinda.

The legendary filmmaker is now attached to an upcoming adaptation of the DC Comics series “Blackhawk.” Now, before you get all concerned (or excited) that Spielberg is bringing his talent to yet another superhero film, “Blackhawk” isn’t just another Superman.

“Blackhawk” is a series that was first published by Quality Comics back in 1941, and later DC Comics, and follows a group of hotshot pilots called The Blackhawks. These pilots are from various nationalities and fly as part of this elite group, led by the mysterious Blackhawk. They operate out of a hidden base known as Blackhawk Island and fight bad guys that have included your typical supervillains, as well as the Axis forces during World War II. So, “Blackhawk” is more like the ‘Indiana Jones’-type pulp adventure and less like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Spielberg said in a statement, “It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring ‘Ready Player One’ to the screen. They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on ‘Blackhawk.’”

“We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure. We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing ‘Blackhawk’ to movie audiences worldwide,” said WB Chairman Toby Emmerich.

The script for “Blackhawk” is being written by David Koepp, who has worked with Spielberg a number of times including “Jurassic Park,” ‘The Lost World,’ and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Right now, Spielberg is only attached to produce the film, but as Deadline is reporting, the filmmaker is eyeing the project as a potential directorial job, as well.

Of course, production on this film is not even close to underway. Spielberg is wrapped up in prep for ‘Indiana Jones 5’ and already has another project lined up for right after. So, don’t expect “Blackhawk” in theaters anytime soon.
