Spike Lee Would Consider Working With Marvel "If The Right Opportunity Comes Across"

With Marvel Studios dominating the box office and superhero projects getting the green light in massive numbers, eventually, everyone will have their hands in a comic book film at some point, right? Well, even though he’s been rumored in the past to have his own ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff film in development, it appears that Spike Lee doesn’t have that superhero movie lined up anytime soon. But that doesn’t mean he would turn down Marvel, if offered.

Speaking to EW, the filmmaker was asked if he ever saw himself working on a Marvel film in the future. Perhaps unsurprising, considering he has said he was a fan of comics when he was a kid, Spike Lee didn’t completely rule out the possibility of working with the studio on a superhero film. However, if he ever did work on a superhero film, it’s definitely not going to be with DC Films.

“I have nothing against Marvel. I grew up reading Spider-Man comic books,” said Lee. “To me, DC Comics was always corny.”

When he was asked if he said that just to rile up the bitter Marvel vs. DC debate, Lee laughed and added, “I’m just saying. I was all about Marvel. If the right opportunity comes across, I’m not campaigning for it, but I will give it consideration.”

As mentioned, Lee has been rumored to be working on superhero films in the past. Most recently, back in 2018, it was reported that Lee was going to direct a ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff film titled “Nightwatch.” However, later that year, the director shot down that report and claimed it wasn’t happening. Since then, we haven’t really heard anything else about the project.

And over the past few years since that rumor, Marvel Studios’ cache has only grown to new heights. With filmmakers like Chloe Zhao, Sam Raimi, and Ryan Coogler taking on Marvel projects over that time, it’s clear that the studio isn’t afraid to hand off the reins to folks with very distinct styles. So maybe we could see that Spike Lee superhero film sometime in the future.
