Steven Spielberg & Richard Donner Discuss ‘Goonies’ Sequel Issues During A New Cast Reunion Livestream

Hailed as one of the best films of the ‘80s, as well as one of the best family films ever, “The Goonies” has stood the test of time and delighted millions of film fans in the decades since its release. And normally, when you have a film that is so well-received, especially in an era now where every film gets a revival, studios deliver dump trucks of cash on filmmakers’ doorsteps to get a sequel made. But according to Steven Spielberg, folks involved with “The Goonies” have tried to get a new film going, but they haven’t yet cracked the code.

As a guest on the recent ‘Goonies’ livestream reunion, featuring just about everyone involved in the cast and crew of the film, Spielberg was asked about the possibility of a sequel film. His response, at once, inspires a little hope that maybe it’ll get made, but it also shows just how difficult it has been to figure out what that story might look like.

Chris [Columbus], Dick [Donner] and I — and Lauren [Shuler Donner] — have had a lot of conversations about it,” said Spielberg (via Deadline). “Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water.”

He added, “Until we do, people are just going to have to look at this [livestream] a hundred times!”

This led Donner to jokingly reply, “How are you going to find seven miserable kids like this again that are new and fresh?”

Previously, a couple of years ago, Columbus said that the difficulty with a ‘Goonies’ sequel isn’t just the story idea, but also the cast availability. With decades passed, it’s even more difficult to get folks like Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Quan, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green all together for a new film. And even still, as Donner joked, who would be the new cast that grabs the baton and carries it into the future (because we know studios aren’t about to revive something like ‘Goonies’ without a whole franchise planned out)?

For now, Spielberg is right, you can watch the cast reunion below to scratch your ‘Goonies’ sequel itch.
