Sufjan Stevens Was Traumatized By The Oscars & Calls It "A Horrifying Scientology End-Of-Year Prom"

Awards shows aren’t for everybody. There are some people (myself included) that get caught up in the pageantry and politics that go into each and every awards show in the realms of film and TV. And then there are people like musician Sufjan Stevens, who apparently doesn’t have any patience for those ceremonies and that includes the biggest one of them all—the Oscars.

Speaking to The Guardian, Stevens was in the middle of promoting his new album when the topic of the Oscars was brought up. That’s when the artist gave his opinion of the awards show, which honors the very best in film and is one of the most coveted trophies you can receive in the industry. And let’s just say, Stevens, well, isn’t a fan, especially when he talks about performing at the ceremony a couple of years ago.

“Honestly, one of the most traumatizing experiences of my entire life,” he said. Steven described the event as “a horrifying Scientology end-of-year prom” representative of “everything I hate about America and popular culture.” Ouch. Tell us how you really feel, amirite?

Stevens added, “I didn’t want to have anything to do with that world and that culture. I don’t want to be part of any room full of adults hemming and hawing over plastic trophies.”

Of course, the musician was thrust into the Oscars spotlight thanks to his award-nominated song, “Mystery of Love,” which was written for Luca Guadagnino’s beloved, “Call Me By Your Name.” And as is customary for the Oscars, the musicians who were nominated that year were invited to perform in front of the crowd during the marathon awards telecast. It would appear that Stevens, who did just fine performing his ballad, hated every moment of it. We probably shouldn’t expect to see a repeat Oscars performance from the musician. At least not anytime soon.
