Taron Egerton Talks About How Conversations For Cyclops Went Nowhere Very Early

But with San Diego Comic-Con finally back after a two-year hiatus, fans wanted to know all about the rumors surrounding Egerton and the “X-Men” franchise. Questions abound: will Egerton take over as Wolverine in the new iteration of the character, and was he ever in talks to play Cyclops in the most recent “X-Men” films? On a recent interview on the “Sway In The Morning” Syrius XM radio show, Egerton gave an answer to the latter, and it’s a definitive one.

On the topic of possibly playing Cyclops, Egerton said, “To be honest, the reason that conversation never went any further is because I didn’t want to play a character for a potential series of movies where you don’t see my eyes.” If you’re not familiar with Cyclops, typically the leader of the mutant X-Men outfit, emits powerful red energy beams from his eyes that force him to wear unique eyewear to protect others. So, if Egerton took on the Cyclops mantle, he’d have his eyes covered the entire time.

For Egerton, that me the part an immediate no-go for him. “I felt instinctively, creatively, that the eyes are the windows to the soul,” he continued. “I would find that challenging, and I just didn’t find it an intriguing prospect, so it’s not that they never offered it to me, but there was a conversation, a real conversation, that never went any further.” So, there you have it: Egerton had a real conversation with 20th Century Fox about becoming the character in the latest movie series, but the actor had no interest in the part.  The role eventually went to Tye Sheridan.

But what about those Wolverine rumors? Egerton recently confirmed he talk to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige about the role, but no news about it from the rest of the “Sway In The Morning” interview. So, that remains just one of countless Marvel/MCU rumors currently circulating.
