Was Taylor Swift The Reason That FX's 'Deadpool' Animated Series Was Canceled?

Like most things in life, you can blame Taylor Swift for the end of the “DeadpoolFX animated series.

While over the weekend it was announced that the upcoming “Deadpool” series was canceled by FX, there really wasn’t an actual reason given. Just the whole “creative differences” excuse. This was followed by a now-epic tweet by series co-creator Donald Glover, who released a 15-page script where he vented about the cancelation. But now, it seems we have a more specific reason “Deadpool” was canceled, and it might have to do with a certain blonde pop singer.

“There really was a Taylor Swift episode,” Stephen Glover, co-creator of the series (and brother of Donald), said, in a tweet that has now been deleted (but preserved by The Wrap). “It was HILARIOUS. And it definitely was the last straw lol.”

“Our show wasn’t too black. It wasn’t really that black at all. But we definitely wanted to give ‘Rick and Morty’ a run for their money and I think we would have. Proud of the gang,” he said in a subsequent tweet.

The “too black” comment comes on the heels of the script that Stephen’s brother wrote. In the script, Deadpool, in a delightfully meta way, ponders all the different reasons the series might have been canceled, which included the possibility of being “too black.”

However, in the script, Deadpool also mentions how they created an episode about Taylor Swift. But considering that the script that was written was full of jokes, some wondered if Donald Glover included that tidbit as a funny aside. It seems as if there actually was a Swift-centric episode, and perhaps that was the “last straw” for the troubled production.

Judging by the “finale” script, the series was definitely going to have the same style of humor of the massive feature film, but also include plenty of topical, current references. It could be that FX was worried that “Deadpool,” by lampooning massive stars, could open itself up to more controversy.

Sadly, as more and more comes out about the ill-fated series, its clear that FX and the Glovers could have had something special on their hands with “Deadpool.” But now, viewers won’t get to decide for themselves.
