The Daniels Win Best Director At The 2023 DGA Awards

Guild award season got serious Saturday night as the Directors Guild of America handed out its annual honors for directorial achievement. With a potential work stoppage in the months ahead, the 2023 DGA Awards were a moment of requisite celebration for the nominees, winners, and guild overall. Surprising no one, the top honor for Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film went to Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” They are also the frontrunners for the Best Director Oscar which will be announced on March 12.

Charlotte Wells continued a remarkable debut winning the First-Time Theatrical Feature Film Director for “Aftersun.”

“Station Eleven” finished off its extended awards season run with Helen Shaver winning the DGA Award for the Movies for Television and Limited Series category. Bill Hader won his second Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series award for “Barry” in a very competitive field. Sam Levinson won his first DGA Award in the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in the Dramatic Series category for “Euphoria.”

In other categories, Glenn Weiss took the award for Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Specials (his ninth DGA Award win), Liz Patrick and “Saturday Night Live” won for Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Regularly Scheduled Programming, Anne Renton‘s work on “Best Foot Forward” took Directorial Achievement in Children’s Programs, Ben Simmons took the Directorial Achievement in Reality Programs award for “Running Wild with Bear Grylls.”

The Oscar precursor awards will continue on Sunday, Feb. 19 when the BAFTA Film Awards are handed out in London.
