After a huge 2024 with hits like “Anora” and “Longlegs,” NEON looks like it’s surpassed A24 as the best little indie distributor in Hollywood. And with “The Monkey” and “The Life Of Chuck” on their 2025 release lists, NEON’s hot streak will likely continue. But what about in 2026 and beyond?

That’s where projects like “The Wrong Girls” come into play. NEON announced today that production on the upcoming project began in LA last week. A stoner comedy of the first order, the film stars Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat as codependent best friends living paycheck to paycheck (and bong rip to bong rip) when a case of mistaken identity throws their lives into chaos. Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani and LaKeith Stanfield also star in supporting roles, with Zack Fox and Tony Hale rounding out the main cast.
Dylan Meyer makes his directorial debut with “The Wrong Girls,” and also writes the film’s script. Producers on the project include Maggie McLean, Stewart, and Meyer via Nevermind Pictures. Alex McAtee, James Weaver, Rogen, and Evan Goldberg also produce via Point Grey. Allison Carter and Jon Read also produce via Savage Rose Productions in a development partnership with NEON. NEON EVP of Acquisitions & Production Jason Wald oversees “The Wrong Girls” with Claire Timmons, VP of Talent Relations, and Kate Gondwe, Manager ADP.
“The Wrong Girls” is one of the first independent films to shoot in LA in the wake of the city’s devastating fires, and the production is committed to hiring LA residents throughout its 29-day production. 95% of the film’s approximately 100-person cast are local LA residents, including DP Todd Banhazi, composer Ty Segall, and Emmy nominated costume designer Heidi Bivens. Additionally, Philadelphia punk band Mannequin Pussy will perform for the film at an LA DIY space.
Meyer’s film is now the third movie from NEON to star Stewart, after Pablo Larraín‘s “Spencer” from 2021 and David Cronenberg‘s 2022 comeback “Crimes Of The Future.” Recent work for the actress includes “Love Me” and “Sacramento” which hits theaters in April. As for Shawkat, she recently reunited with “Green Room” co-star Callum Turner for “Atropia,” which won Sundance‘s Grand Jury prize last month. Expect that film to hit theaters later this year.
As for NEON, it expects 2024 acquisitions “Anora” and “The Seed Of The Sacred Fig” to do well at the upcoming Academy Awards. “Anora” has won a slew of awards already, starting with the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival last May. Since then, the film, director Sean Baker, and its star Mikey Madison have also won big at the Critics Choice Awards, Directors Guild Of America, Producers Guild Of America, and more, with many expecting it to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Mohammad Rasoulof‘s film is also a favorite to win the Best International Feature Oscar; the awards show is on March 2.
