'Toff Guys': Colin Farrell Joins Guy Ritchie's Star-Studded Crime Thriller As Kate Beckinsale Departs

Remember when Colin Farrell was seen as a bit of a disappointment? After strong performances in “Tigerland” and “Minority Report,” the actor was going to be the next big thing. Then came “Phone Booth” and “Daredevil” and suddenly Farrell was seen as just another actor. But over the last few years, he’s hit his stride, with even career-best work in films like “The Lobster,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” and “Widows.” Now, he’s bringing that renewed swagger to filmmaker Guy Ritchie.

THR is reporting that Ritchie has hired Farrell to star in the upcoming crime film “Toff Guys.” In the film, the actor will play a character named Coach, who, as the name suggests, coaches MMA fighters. Farrell joins Matthew McConaughey, Henry Golding, Hugh Grant, and Jeremy Strong in the all-star cast.

“Toff Guys” is being hailed as a return to his roots for filmmaker Ritchie. After dabbling quite a bit in the world of big-budget blockbusters, with films like “Sherlock Holmes (1 & 2),” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” and the upcoming live-action “Aladdin.” Now, the director is going back to the genre that put him on the map — off-beat crime.

The film follows McConaughey as a weed mogul that is trying to leave the drug life. The rest of the cast of characters all factor into McConaughey’s life, either as friends or potential foes, as the businessman attempts to leave the life. Golding is said to play a Vietnamese gangster, while Grant will portray a photographer that is attempting to blackmail McConaughey with some scandalous pictures.

Now, one person who was originally signed on to star has apparently left the production, according to the report. Kate Beckinsale, who was announced alongside McConaughey and the rest, has apparently been replaced by actress Michelle Dockery, who is best known for her role on “Downton Abbey.” In the film, she’ll play the wife of McConaughey.

No release date for “Toff Guys” has been set. However, if you want to see Farrell sooner than later, he’ll next star in the upcoming Disney film, “Dumbo,” hitting theaters on May 24, 2019.
