Tom Hardy, Tye Sheridan, Bill Skarsgard, Stephan James & More Join Rupert Sanders' 'The Things They Carried'

According to Deadline, the cast for the film adaptation of Tim O’Brien’s acclaimed book, “The Things They Carried” is coming together and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better cast of young actors today. The cast is led by Tom Hardy, who is an A-lister already, but he’s joined by an ensemble of young actors that includes Tye Sheridan, Stephan James, Bill Skarsgard, Pete Davidson, Ashton Sanders, Moises Arias, and Angus Cloud. The Vietnam War film is set to tell the story of a young group of soldiers that make up Alpha Company and have to deal with the horrors of war.

“The Things They Carried” will be directed by Rupert Sanders, who is probably best known for his work on “Snow White and the Huntsman,” as well as the film “Ghost in the Shell” and the upcoming sci-fi series, “Foundation.” The film is written by Scott B. Smith, who was nominated for an Oscar for his script for “A Simple Plan.”

“‘The Things They Carried’ is a beautifully crafted work and one of the most viscerally evocative books I have ever read,” said Sanders. “For me, it transcends its subject of young men at war and explores the landscape of deep human emotions that reside within all of us. We live in such turbulent times, and the themes of love, fear, and mortality that Tim explored thirty years ago still resonate today, maybe even more powerfully. I am so excited about the cast we have put together – we have not seen this many young stars from different backgrounds sharing the screen since the days of ‘Platoon’ or ‘The Outsiders.’”

As mentioned, Hardy is a great actor that has a number of massive roles under his belt. But it’s his other actors that are really the most interesting part of “The Things They Carried.” Sheridan is an actor that has appeared in “Ready Player One,” a few ‘X-Men’ films, and “The Mountain.” Stephan James is probably best known for his work in “If Beale Street Could Talk.” Then you have Skarsgard, who played Pennywise in the “IT” films, as well as appearing in “The Devil All the Time.” Davidson is the ‘SNL’ castmember that starred in Judd Apatow’s recent comedy, “The King of Staton Island.” and then there’s Sanders, who appeared in “Moonlight,” as well as films “Captive State” and “Native Son.”

It’s unclear when production might start on the war film, but with a cast like this, you can better believe that “The Things They Carried” will be one of our most anticipated releases coming in the next couple of years.
