Tom Hardy's Passion For 'Venom' Earned Him A Writing Credit On 'Let There Be Carnage'

Believe it or not, as much as Tom Hardy has been involved in the creation of the “Venom” film franchise, the actor didn’t have any story or writing credits in the first film. However, with the upcoming “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” it appears the actor is getting his first-ever “story by” credit for his contributions to the film. And by contributions, as screenwriter Kelly Marcel recently explained, we mean the actor didn’t necessarily write anything but spent hours working on the script and story that went into the highly anticipated sequel.

Speaking to Empire, writer Kelly Marcel explained the process in which she wrote the script for “Venom: Let There Be Carnage.” And it sure does sound like Hardy was a pivotal member of the creative team behind the new sequel.

“This is new for him, to get credit, but it’s not new for him to be this involved,” she said. “He’s absolutely 100 percent committed to everything that he does. He’s married to Venom. He loves this character. He’s very involved in what he thinks should happen.”

Marcel added, “He doesn’t get a pen and write. We spent months breaking the story together on FaceTime, riffing on ideas, seeing what worked, seeing what didn’t. Then I took everything we spoke about and holed up somewhere for three months quietly, knocking out a script.”

Of course, there’s a lot of fan anticipation for the “Venom” sequel. Not only is the film the next chapter in the franchise that saw the first film earn more than $850 million at the box office, but ‘Let There Be Carnage,’ as the title implies, sees the introduction of the incredibly popular Marvel villain, Carnage (played by Woody Harrelson). While there’s not a whole lot known about the plot of the film, the first trailer does show how the film keeps the offbeat tone and humor of the first “Venom,” with Hardy once again providing a lot of physical comedy.
