As someone who loved "Parks & Recreation" until it started doubling down on the one dimensional aspect of its characters in the last two seasons or so, I’ve been uncertain about Aziz Ansari. His lone attempt at a big screen, co-starring in "30 Minutes Or Less" was a misfire, and his Tom Haverford character often seemed cut a little too close to his own personality. Well, I’m happy to be surprised, because the first trailer for his upcoming Netflix series "Master Of None" sees the actor stretching his wings in some really pleasant ways.

Featuring Noël Wells, Eric Wareheim, Lena Waithe, Kelvin Yu, and H. Jon Benjamin, the show follows Dev, who is trying to figure out his life and find love in New York City. Yes, it’s a familiar scenario, but Ansari seems to find a way to make it fresh, while putting race on the table without making it a big deal, and surrounding himself with great ensemble. I really was not expecting much, but the show has just jumped right onto my must watch list for the fall. And oh, in case you were wondering, James Ponsoldt, Lynn Shelton, and Eric Wareheim are among the directors involved. Not too shabby.
"Master Of None" hits Netflix on November 6th. Watch below.
