Okay, so when the premise first dropped for Luc Besson‘s “Lucy,” it sounded a bit Bourne-esque — ordinary person suddenly discovers extraordinary abilities. And when the first trailer dropped, clearly I was wrong. Rather, “Lucy” seems like “Transcendence” meets “The Matrix” meets “Limitless.” Or something.
Starring Scarlett Johansson, the movie does follow an ordinary person who basically becomes an X-Men mutant. After being forced to carry drugs in her body, the substances leak into her system and apparently give her access to 100% of her brain sorta like Neo or Johnny Depp inside the internet. And this allows her to basically change her environment at will (not sure how that works) with director Luc Besson giving it all some admittedly impressive visual pop. The guy from “Oldboy” and Morgan Freeman are in this too, and while there will be lots of explosions, one would think someone with total brain functionality would be able to figure out a solution to their problem that doesn’t require guns. But that’s less fun, we suppose.
