“We bought the rights to the book that tells the story of the trial, but our film is not really about that, so we are always a bit wary of even saying that,” director Michael Winterbottom told THR last summer about his upcoming drama based on American journalist Barbie Latza Nadeau‘s book “Angel Face: Sex, Murder and the Inside Story of Amanda Knox.” “Our film is actually about losing a daughter, losing someone close to you; why are we so interested in violence and why are we not more interested in love.” Well, it’s a nice claim to make but based on this first teaser trailer/promo reel for the movie, the trial takes center stage.
Starring Daniel Bruhl, Kate Beckinsale and Cara Delevingne, if these thirty seconds are anything to go by, “The Face Of An Angel” is very much about the trial of Amanda Knox (renamed here), and certainly the movie now has a bit of extra buzz thanks to the young American being convicted again by an Italian court of murdering her roommate (she spent four years in prison before the original verdict was overturned). The case made headlines around the world, and shone an intense light on the Italian criminal justice system, and all the while Knox has vehemently denied having anything to do with the death of her former flatmate. No release date yet, but this project is on the sales floor at the European Film Market in Berlin.
So, is this movie a salacious cash-in or, as Winterbottom says, something with a bit more in-depth? Watch below. [Variety]
