Stop if you’ve heard this one before from a Woody Allen movie: a man faces an existential crisis and has lost all perspective on life’s meaning until a lovely breath of fresh air walks into his life. Yep, welcome to the director’s latest "Irrational Man," and with a Cannes Film Festival premiere on the horizon, the first trailer is here.
The first thing that’s noticeable right off the bat is that in his fifty collaborations with the filmmaker, cinematographer Darius Khondji hasn’t lost a sun-dappled step. This looks damn gorgeous. Of course, it doesn’t hurt when Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone are your leads, with both delivering the expected beats from Woody Allen’s prototypical characters. The real surprise? Parker Posey, who looks like the secret MVP in this one, sliding right into the dialogue patter perfectly.
