'47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter' Trailer: Still Not Safe To Go Back In The Water

It’s no secret that “Jaws” changed filmmaking forever, essentially kickstarting the summer blockbuster movie season and the career of Steven Spielberg. However, it also proved how effective sharks are like movie monsters, and how much money films featuring them can make. The “Jaws” sequels, “Deep Blue Sea,” “Open Water,” this summer’s “The Meg,” a surprise hit by early measures, and last year’s “The Shallows” and “47 Meters Down” have all capitalized on the hold sharks have on the public consciousness. The latter film, directed by Johannes Roberts and starring Mandy Moore and Claire Holt, was one of the most profitable films of the year despite middling reviews, grossing $61.7 million on a $5.5 million budget, so it’s no surprise that a sequel is headed towards theaters next summer.

Shockingly not called “48 Meters Down,” “47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter,” still directed by Roberts this time, apparently expands on the lackluster story of the first film by seeing more hapless twenty-somethings find themselves at odds with some of the fiercest creatures in nature. The very brief, official synopsis can be read below.

Five backpackers, diving in a ruined underwater city, quickly learn they are not alone in the submerged caves.

According to Collider, the sequel will swim to Brazil, where a group of girls take an adventurous trip to find some scenery off the beaten path, an underwater paradise of hidden ruins and, of course, sharks.

As of now, not much else is known about the film, and no cast announcements have been made as of yet (although it’s likely Moore won’t be returning for the sequel). The trailer doesn’t give too many more details, other than confirming that sharks will be attacking people at a depth of 47 meters. Is there anything more you need to know?

“47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter” swims into theaters on June 28, 2019. Maybe they’ll actually reveal who’s in it by then, but maybe it doesn’t even matter.
