Last weekend, “Shazam!” star Zachary Levi went on Instagram to ask the trolls that have been trying to position his superhero film against the upcoming Marvel Studios film “Captain Marvel” to please stop. In the nicest way possible, the actor begged for the toxic fans to stop pitting the two films against each other because everyone wants both to succeed and their comments are doing nothing but hurting everyone involved. It was a valiant effort, for sure, but apparently, it might have fallen on deaf ears because the actor recently went back on Instagram to try another tactic. He wants to deal with these trolls in a much harsher way.
Speaking to the fans on an Instagram live stream, Levi asked for help from any lawyers or police officers who might be able to help him with a situation he’s been experiencing since the story of him defending “Captain Marvel” broke. You see, instead of calming the trolls down, it would seem that his words made these folks raise the stakes against him.
“I’ve been texted and crank called kind of relentlessly over the past couple of days,” said Levi. “I tried to reason with these people, but now, I’d like to prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.”
The issue of trolling and toxic fandom definitely predates the whole “Captain Marvel” vs. “Shazam” thing for sure. And for those wondering why these two films are even being compared, then it’s interesting to note that in an odd twist of fate these films are being released a month apart and up until recently, in the comics, Shazam was called Captain Marvel. However, to avoid confusion with Marvel’s brand and its own superhero, DC changed the name to Shazam.
The good news for those of us that don’t get involved in this sort of social media stalking and/or abuse, is that Brie Larson’s film is being released next Friday and if early predictions are any indication, “Captain Marvel” should have an absolutely massive box office and receive general praise from critics. Hopefully, that will be enough to stop the onslaught of negativity that has been building in recent months. Fingers crossed.
