Got a Tip?

Jordan Peele To Produce A Remake Of Wes Craven’s ‘The People Under The Stairs’

First, Jordan Peele decided he wanted to write and produce a new version of “Candyman,” which will now be arriving next August. However, the filmmaker isn’t done with remakes, as it appears he’s onboard a new version of “The People Under the Stairs.”

According to Collider, Peele is set to produce a remake of the 1991 horror film, “The People Under the Stairs,” which is written and directed by the legendary Wes Craven. The film follows the story of a group of people that find themselves trapped inside the house of a lunatic couple after they attempt to rob the family. From there, they realize just how crazy the captors actually are.

Much like Peele did with his directorial efforts, “Get Out” and “Us,” as well as the upcoming “Candyman,” the filmmaker is likely going to make sure his version of “The People Under the Stairs” keeps its social commentary intact. The original film, as is the case with all solid horror films, has clear social messages and is unafraid to scare audiences while also presenting a bit of a counter-culture point-of-view. As is written about in various places, the 1991 original has clear political messaging with its lead characters resembling former President and First Lady, Ronald and Nancy Reagan.

The full extent of Peele’s involvement in “The People Under the Stairs” is unclear at this time. We know he’s producing the film through his Monkeypaw banner, but whether or not he has a hand in the script, as he did with “Candyman,” is still unknown. This film joins a variety of other projects that Peele has a hand in. We’ve previously reported that he’s teaming with Issa Rae for a genre film that should be coming soon, and there’s a mystery film that has his name attached to it but no other info. The latter is expected to be whatever film he has next on his directing slate, following up on last year’s “Us.”
