‘Zorro’: Robert Rodriguez Putting A Female Spin On The Classic Hero For Upcoming NBC Series

2020 has been one interesting year for Robert Rodriguez. It’s almost impossible to nail down which version of Rodriguez we’re going to see with any project, but so far this year, he’s released an episode of “The Mandalorian,” marking his directorial debut in the “Star Wars” universe, he’s on the verge of releasing a kid-friendly superhero epic, “We Can Be Heroes,” and now, he’s developing a brand-new, contemporary take on “Zorro” for network TV. You definitely can’t say Robert Rodriguez likes to play it safe, huh?

According to Deadline, Rodriguez is set to produce and co-write a new “Zorro” series for NBC. He’s joined by his sister Rebecca Rodriguez, who will also co-write and direct the new contemporary spin on the classic hero. The show will focus on a new Zorro, underground artist Sola Dominguez, who takes up the masked identity to help fight for social justice. The series is also produced by Sofia Vergara and her production company, LatinWe.

This is far from the first time that Robert Rodriguez has been in development on a TV series. Obviously, we just mentioned that he directed an episode of “The Mandalorian.” But in addition, he’s also worked on various series for his El Rey network, including “From Dusk Till Dawn.” But considering this is coming to NBC, this might very well be his biggest TV duties to date.

Obviously, we’re seeing quite a few established IPs come back with new spins, but it’s interesting to see NBC jump into the defacto superhero game with “Zorro.” CW has been dominating the network TV superhero realm with its various DC Comics series, including many led by female heroes. Perhaps NBC sees the success of CW and wants to try its hand at it?

It’s far too early to know if “Zorro” will get a full-season order and premiere on NBC. However, with Robert Rodriguez and Sofia Vergara attached, this does seem like a no-brainer.
