‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Struts To A Fashionable $233 Million Worldwide As ‘Michael’ Continues To Thrill

Unlike several other big releases in 2026, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” didn’t overperform at the box office this weekend. Well, in the U.S. at least. The 20th Century Studios and Walt Disney Studios release pulled in $77 million domestically. That’s more than double the $27 million the original opened to 20 years ago and on par with what pre-release polling predicted. The bigger news was overseas, where the David Frankel-directed sequel pulled in a monster $156.6 million for $233 million so far.

At a reported $100 million production cost, marketing costs aside, “Prada 2” is theoretically in the black before it ever hits ancillaries and will be a substantial money maker for Disney. “Prada 2” found positive reviews, including a 63 grade on Metacritic and a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also earned an A- CinemaScore, which is good news with a busy summer ahead. It also constitutes the biggest opening for Anne Hathaway since 2013’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” is the biggest debut domestically ever for Meryl Streep, and the second largest to date for Emily Blunt after 2023’s “Oppenheimer.”

Last weekend’s champ, “Michael,” dropped just 44% for another $54 million and $183.8 million domestic. Worldwide, the Antoine Fuqua biopic has taken in $423.9 million. It appears to be headed for a $650-700 million global cume. That’s more than enough to recoup its unexpected $200 million production budget financed by Lionsgate, Universal Pictures, and the Jackson Estate.

Universal’s “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” fell to third with $12.1 million and became the first 2026 release to cross $400 million with $402 million domestic. Globally, the Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo collaboration has pulled in $894 million worldwide. It was widely expected to easily be the first $1 billion grosser this year, but it has cooled off significantly. It may just miss the mark.

“Project Hail Mary” held on to fourth place, dropping just 33% with another $7.4 million for $320.1 million domestic. In its seventh weekend of release, the Chris Miller and Phil Lord epic has been a game-changer for Amazon MGM Studios, earning $638.4 million worldwide. Crossing the $700 million mark when all is said and done might be tough, but it’s gonna be close.

Neon counterprogrammed “Devil” with the supernatural thriller “Hokum” to strong results. The Damian McCarthy flick pulled in $6.4 million in just 1,865 theaters for a very good $3,402 per screen. The SXSW premiere has earned strong reviews (78 on Metacritic, 86% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a B on CinemaScore, which, for a horror film, isn’t bad. It’s unclear how much “Hokum” cost Neon for domestic rights, but this looks like a potential cash cow for the indie distributor.

Angel Studios acquired Andy Serkis’ long-in-the-works animated “Animal Farm,” and the faith-based distributor couldn’t pull off a miracle this time around. Ripped by critics (28 on Metacritic, 25% on Rotten Tomatoes), the dumbed-down George Orwell adaptation earned just $3.4 million in 2,600 theaters. That’s not a disaster, but the C- CinemaScore certainly doesn’t bode well for good word of mouth.

Also disappointing among new releases was Renny Harlin’s campy shark thriller “Deep Water.” The Magenta Light release earned mixed to positive reviews (54 on Metacritic, 74% on Rotten Tomatoes), but only found $2.1 million in 1,675 theaters. This Gene Simmons-produced (yes, that Gene Simmons) flick will have to find an audience and any shot at profitability on VOD.

Next weekend’s new releases include “Mortal Kombat II” and “The Sheep Detectives.”
