Miranda Priestly never ever thought to hold her tongue on any subject, which may explain why Meryl Streep has taken a page out of her outspokenly blunt playbook of late, sounding deeply unimpressed by Hollywood’s appetite for simpler heroes and villains
Speaking alongside Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, while promoting “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” now in theaters from 20th Century Studios (read our review) on Hits Radio Breakfast Show, the three-time Oscar winner lamented how some movies have flattened character conflict into something easier, duller, and what she believes to be much closer to superhero logic.

“I feel like you get a realistic view,” Streep said about the sloppier aspect of the characters in her ‘Devil Wears Prada’ sequel and how this new installment also shows the character’s softer side. “I think we tend to Marvel-ize the movies now. We got the villains, and we got the good guys, and it’s so boring.”
“What’s really interesting about life is that some of the heroes are flawed and some of the villains are human and interesting and have their own strengths,” she continued. “So that’s what I like about this [movie]. It’s messier.”
Directed again by David Frankel and written by Aline Brosh McKenna, the sequel reunites Streep with Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, while adding Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, Pauline Chalamet, B.J. Novak, and Conrad Ricamora.
Streep also recently revealed she doubled her salary on the Disney sequel by originally turning down an offer to return to her iconic role.
“They called me up, and they made an offer, and I said, ‘No, not going to do it,’” Streep said during a cast interview with Today. “I knew it was going to be a hit, and I wanted to see if I doubled my ask … And they went right away and said, ‘Sure.’ I thought, I’m 50-60 [years old]—it took me this long to understand that I could do that! They needed me, I felt. I was ready to retire. That was a lesson.”
Following a major $32.5 million opening day and strong previews of $10 million, “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” is projected to dominate the box office with a massive $75 million to $100 million+ opening weekend in North America.
