Abbas Kiarostami's 'Koker Trilogy' & Jane Campion's 'An Angel At My Table' Highlight Criterion's August Releases

It’s that time again, film fans. Another month goes by and we’re back telling you what’s coming in August from the Criterion Collection. And like every month, our wallets weep. August sees the release of the critically-acclaimed “Koker Trilogy” from Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami. His three films are joined by great movies from Jane Campion, Yasujiro Ozu, Lucille Carra, and Douglas Sirk.

For those film fans not familiar with the “Koker Trilogy” from director Kiarostami, then Criterion has you covered. The three films, which include “Where Is the Friend’s Home?” (1987), “And Life Goes On” (1992), and “Through the Olive Trees” (1994), are hitting the Collection in August with new 2K transfers, as well as a ton of extra goodies.

Even though Kiarostami never officially agreed with the films being lumped together as a trilogy, film fans consider his three films, all set in the town of Koker, linked in a variety of ways. And viewed together, the three films shed light not just on the filmmaker, as an artist, but filmmaking, in general.

Kiarostami isn’t the only Palme d’Or winner among the Criterion group in August, however. Winner Jame Campion sees her film “An Angel at My Table” get a proper Criterion release this summer. The film, as you might expect from the Collection, gets a brand-new high-definition transfer, approved by the filmmaker, as well as 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. So this very well might be the best the film has ever looked and sounded.

Joining the two acclaimed directors are films such as “The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice,” from acclaimed filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu, Lucille Carra’s “The Inland Sea,” and Douglas Sirk’s “Magnificent Obsession.”
