Alex Garland’s ‘Devs’ Teaser Is Giving Us Serious ‘Ex Machina’ Vibes

Here’s to Alex Garland, a writer who has made his career out of a straightforward question: “What the future, but bad and scary?” From his early work on titles like “Sunshine” and “Never Let Me Go” to his current directorial work that has cemented his status as a Hollywood visionary (“Ex Machina,” “Annihilation“), Garland has emerged as one of the most exciting voices in the realm of science-fiction. Equal parts provocative and unnerving, his films have made him one of the most interested directors of his era.

Or should I say his “projects”? Not content to leave his stamp on cinema, Garland will soon pivot to the small screen with “Devs,” a new limited television series starring Nick Offerman and Garland’s long-time collaborator Sonoya Mizuno. The show will premiere on FX—the current frontrunner in the whole auteurist-genre-bending subgenre of television—and promises to build on some of the themes present in films like “Ex Machina.” Earlier today, FX debuted a handful of new images and a short teaser at New York Comic Con, all of which you can find below.

Here’s the plot summary, courtesy of FX Networks:

“Devs” is a limited series that focuses on a young software engineer named Lily Chan (Mizuno) who works for Amaya, a cutting-edge tech company based in Silicon Valley. After her boyfriend’s apparent suicide, Lily suspects foul play and begins to investigate. She quickly realizes that all roads lead to Forest (Offerman), Amaya’s enigmatic CEO, and Devs, the company’s secret development division. In Lily’s quest to discover the truth, she uncovers a technology-based conspiracy that could change the world.

No release date has been set for “Devs,” but with the first footage now available, it won’t be long until FX starts ramping up their promotion in earnest. Spring 2020 doesn’t feel like too much of a reach? One can hope, anyway.
