Kathryn Bigelow‘s upcoming film sounds like a project that clearly resonates with our racially charged times. But even divorced from what it’s all about, the cast she’s putting together is enough to intrigue us. Anthony Mackie, who worked with Bigelow on the Oscar-winning “The Hurt Locker,” has signed up for her new film. The untitled crime drama will be set against the backdrop of Detroit’s devastating riots that took place over five haunting summer days in 1967, with the film exploring systemic racism in the city. And while details on the rest of the cast has mostly been kept mum, Mackie will be playing a Vietnam War veteran in the picture.

We’re loving how this one is coming together, with more details likely to arrive as production is slated to begin this summer. The film will be released in 2017, marking the 50th anniversary of the riots. [Deadline]
