9 Shows To Watch In April: 'Game Of Thrones,' 'Fosse/Verdon,' & More

It seems almost unfair for other shows to make their return and/or premiere this month with the final season of HBO mega-hit “Game of Thrones” taking its very bloody victory lap. That being said, there’s plenty of non-dragon series to look for, especially newly revived anthology “Twilight Zone” with Jordan Peele (hot off the success of his latest film “Us“) taking the Rod Serling narrator role, as well as the upcoming FX limited series “Fosse/Verdon.” Even for those of us who are simply ready for the series to be done, there’s little doubt that ‘Thrones’ will be dominating the conversation until the highly anticipated finale, one of the few remaining weekly event television shows on the air.

Twilight Zone
What You Need To Know: One of the most iconic shows ever seen on television embarks on its latest incarnation.  Jordan Peele, whom we can only assume is going to be responsible for every new, exciting project in Hollywood, serves as both producer and host of this anthology series which will air exclusively on the CBS All Access streaming service (well, except for one episode on YouTube).  Featuring a star-studded cast including Adam Scott, John Cho, Kumail Nanjiani, Seth Rogen and Chris O’Dowd just to name several. Peele appears to be emerging as a new master of suspense following his breakout hit film “Get Out” that took 2017 by storm.  Joining a slew of other horror and suspense-centric shows including “American Horror Story,” “The Walking Dead,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and the wildly successful Netflix series “The Haunting of Hill House” satisfies what looks like an insatiable audience appetite for these types of shows on television.
Release Date: Premieres on April 1 on CBS All Access

Chilling Adventures of Sabina
What You Need To Know: Following the super successful ‘Part 1,’ Kiernan Shipka returns as our favorite teenage witch.  Rather than a traditional second season, the show returns as a ‘Part 2,’ where Sabrina appears to finally embrace her inner witch while continuing to struggle with her half-witch, half-mortal nature.  With a well-reviewed first season under its belt, audiences can look forward to even more spellbinding adventures this spring, with Miranda Otto, Ross Lynch, Lachlan Watson, Chance Perdomo, Gavin Leatherwood, and Michelle Gomez rounding out the cast.
Release Date: Part 2 will premiere on April 5 on Netflix

Killing Eve
What You Need to Know: Something of a surprise hit, Season 1 of the deliciously clever and deceptively sexy “Killing Eve” created by “Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, left viewers desperately yearning for more. Dangling us off an impossibly stunning cliffhanger that found the ongoing cat and mouse game between rogue spy Eve (Sandra Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) come to a standstill as they admit their toxic infatuation/addiction to the other before Eve sticks a knife in the latter’s belly, there’s no telling just where the show will take us next. Darkly hilarious and genuinely moving with a declarative female voice at its center, “Killing Eve” is a perfect marriage of tones and with Oh winning accolades for her performance as the titular character, it should only become increasingly noticed.
Release Date: Season 2 premieres on April 7 on BBC America

The Chi
What You Need to Know: Ever since her impressive work on the Netflix series “Master of None,” Lena Waithe has become one of the most exciting and intriguing voices of the current landscape. With an eye for poignant stories that bring a refreshing level of authenticity to them, her series “The Chi” returns to Showtime following a strong season one debut. With a cast of fellow up and comers from Jason Mitchell (awards-worthy) to Jacob Latimore, we named season one on our best of 2018 list, calling it “…an incredibly bold, confident piece of work that makes us entirely sure that it’ll only grow and grow with time…”.
Release Date: Season 2 premieres April 7 on Showtime

Fosse/Verdon
What You Need To Know: The story of the legendary choreographer and filmmaker comes to life in this new limited series starring Michelle Williams and Sam Rockwell. Williams stars as Gwen Verdon, arguably the greatest Broadway dancer of all time, alongside Rockwell’s Bob Fosse, who is one of the world’s best-known choreographers.  Based on Sam Wasson’s 2013 biography “Fosse” and produced by Academy Award nominee Lin-Manuel Miranda, the series examines the professional and personal relationship between Fosse and Verdon as well as the notable works born of their partnership that lasted until Fosse’s death in 1987.  Considering the boundless talent of both Michelle Williams and Sam Rockwell, this series will captivate audiences with dance serving as a colorful backdrop for a match made in theatrical heaven. Our review said, “‘Fosse/Verdon’ is a true treat for theatre nerds made by theatre nerds.”
Release Date:  The series premieres on FX on April 9
